Fan fiction
I was wondering, does anyone know how Mr de Lint feels about other people creating and posting stories that include people or places from his books? If he's okay with that, would it be possible to have someplace to post such stories? Is there already somplace and I'm not seeing it?

Re: Fan fiction
In a previous incarnation the deLintiad made a book from scratch with member stories, poems, drawings, pictures etc and we printed and bound it ourselves. Charles was sent the first copy and said he was delighted. He has always appeared to encourage new writers and we have, in our Yahoo incarnation, had space for people to post their creations. We will do the same on this board if it is wanted.
As far as using Charles' characters I will have to check on that with him. It may be that he would not want any of characters to feature in a story because they may not behave in a way that he has crafted in his books. However he may not have an objection to them appearing as "extras" in the story, just to establish a time or place when the story is set. I will ask him and let you know.

Re: Fan fiction
I have sent the email Heather . Now we just have to wait for an answer. In the meantime I
have added a new section of the board for folk to post their poems, tales, pictures or whatever. Photos should still be posted as an "answer" in the topic of each members name in the Members' Photos forum.

Re: Fan fiction
We've heard back from Charles. Here are some extracts from his email.
"Hey, Ron.....
Thanks for passing along this question. I don't agree to this sort of thing for both myself and for the sake of the aspiring author. The thing is, they put all this work in, but because of my copyright, they can never use it anywhere. But if they do their own thing, they retain all the rights. I've been asked this before, and always say the same thing. Sometimes..... they do go on to write their own stories and go on to publish them and are very happy that they didn't borrow my characters or setting.
.......so the short answer is, no.
But do tell Heather that I thought her poem was sweet
cheers
Charles"
So I'm sorry Heather, but you will have to come up with your own characters. A great locale can be found in the Borderland novels and short stories. Quite a number of authors have written stories based in Bordertown, including Charles, and it has great scope for a whole variety of characters, I would imagine that Terri Windling holds the copyright, if any, for the location, but there have been so many authors she has given permission to use, that I doubt if it would be strictly enforced. In any case it is an interesting series of books and stories and I'm sure you could be inspired by reading them.
You can find more about Borderland here

Re: Fan fiction
Mr. de Lint sounds so nice. I appreciate how he took the time to explain how he feels about people borrowing his characters and settings. I'm so glad he liked my poem and didn't get upset when he saw the name of one of his characters in it.
I just took a peek at the link you gave for Borderland ... it looks pretty neat! I'm definitely gonna give it more of a look when I'm feeling more awake and can absorb it better. Thank so much for all your help, Gruffydd.
